Another successful and meaningful month comes to an end at Chemishield.
I can’t believe how fast my internship is passing by! It seems as though there is a race, with so much to learn and so little time. Arghh! I wish I could learn it all faster. But as the saying goes – Slow and steady wins the race. So I have to keep going with the course of time. There are no shortcuts to success and so I guess I’ll have to keep grinding and enhancing my skills. Anyways, the last month has been very busy and thrilling at the same time and I’m very excited to tell you what I have been up to!
So as Ciarán said in his post, we are working on a feature to search Safety Data Sheets from a database and perform relevant operations on them. The feature will enhance the usefulness of Chemishield and help get rid of the big and bulky SDS binders which are a challenge to use.
Since we are integrating this feature with Chemishield and also creating it as a standalone product, a lot of planning took place. We designed the blueprint and modelled the SRS and broke it down into many small pieces to start working on them one by one. By the way, SRS is Software Requirements Specification which is basically the description of a software system to be developed. I learnt about it in my last internship and it has proved to be of great help.
After a month of planning sessions, meetings, researching, complaining, many cups of coffee and of course, writing code, we finally have a basic demo-able prototype. The project is far from over and is just in the initial stage. We just have the prototype of the project right now and still need to work our way to match the standards of Chemishield. Even though we just have a base, I would agree with Ciarán that it feels really amazing to see something designed by you take shape and become an actual product eventually. I can’t wait to see the final product but I guess I’ll have to wait a month or two for that.
I am thoroughly enjoying my internship so far and it’s proving to be a great learning experience. As I had mentioned earlier, the team has given us a lot of freedom with our work and are always ready to help us when we need it. It has helped me grow much more than I imagined. The next steps for me are just to continue with what I’m doing. Me and Ciarán have also received some fantastic feedback which is very encouraging, and I’m ecstatic that our work has impressed the stakeholders that we are working with. For the same reason, I want to keep producing high standard work and continue to make the team and the company proud.
I remember Robert Frost who said –
“But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.”
